One of the longest rivers in North America, the St. Lawrence is the outflow for the entire Great Lakes system, which holds nearly 20% of the world’s fresh water.  It flows 744 miles from Lake Ontario into the world’s largest estuary, the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

    • The St Lawrence takes freighters up to Lake Ontario and from there they can travel all the way to Thunder Bay in the centre of Canada, about 2,000 miles from the Atlantic. At this point in its length the river is called Lake St Francis; the very far barely visible shore is New York State.
